SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, or in less technical terms: making the best use of search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Doing this makes your information or product easily acceptable, thereby increasing traffic to your site with the ultimate goal of increasing your sales and profits!
With that being said, how does this SEO thing work? In order to answer this question it is important to take a look at what search engines are and how they work. Of course, it is much more technical than how I’m going to lay it out, but this description gives you what you need to know without bombarding you with mathematical formulas or insanely technical internet terminology.
There are really only 2 things you need to know about Search Engines:
What do they do?
How do they do it?
What they do is simple. They answer questions made by you and countless other individuals. They answer by finding and providing the answers to user requests in an easy to navigate listing of relevant pages sorted by importance.
How they do this is not as simple, but it is easy to break down. Now, this is going to sound like something from a sci-fi movie, but, it really, truly is how search engines accomplish the feat of answering our questions. They utilize robots, aka “crawlers”. These bots search the web, sort the code, and then categorize it. Think of them as the individuals who organize a library, putting all of the cooking books in one section, the gardening books in another and the history books in yet another. Bots do the same thing: search through content, decide what it’s about, whether or not it’s important, and then categorize it as such.
That’s the first big task the bots take on. The next is then utilizing that catalogue of information to answer your inquiries. When you search for something, the bots quickly search their index and return the relevant pages to you in order of importance.
Now back to SEO… once you understand how the search engines work, then you can optimize your personal or business site to gain higher rankings on all of the search engine results. You do this by making your site appealing to two important audiences: the bots and of course, your potential human audience.
In an answer to the original question at hand, good SEO (Search Engine Optimization) simply makes your site more accessible and ultimately more successful!
